Backup & Restore
⚠ Heads up — your data lives only on this computer.
VaultBooks doesn't use the cloud. Nothing is saved on a server. Everything is stored right here in your browser. That's great for privacy — but if you clear your browser, switch computers, or something breaks, your data is gone unless you saved a copy first.
🔁 The good news: one button below saves everything as a single file. One button brings it back. Save that file somewhere safe — your Downloads folder, a USB stick, Google Drive, or just email it to yourself. As long as you have the file, you have your data.
Last backup:Never
💾 Save a copy of everything
Makes one small file with all your money info — every transaction, bill, debt, goal, and savings target. The file lands in your Downloads folder with today's date in the name. Move it somewhere safe (USB stick, Google Drive, email to yourself). Save a fresh copy at least once a month or any time you've added a bunch of new stuff.
📂 Bring your stuff back
Got a copy you saved before? Pick it here and everything comes back exactly how you left it. Works on any computer or browser. Heads up: this replaces what's here right now — so save the current stuff first if you want to keep both.
💡 First time saving a copy? Open the 📖 How to Use guide in the sidebar — Step 5 walks you through saving and bringing it back, plain English, no tech words.

These are your recurring monthly bills — rent, car payments, subscriptions, etc. The match keyword below each bill is what VaultBooks looks for in your bank transactions to auto-detect payments. Edit it to match how your bank describes the charge.
✎ Edit Variable Bills
These are your regular but flexible expenses — groceries, gas, dining, etc. Enter your estimated monthly amount for each. VaultBooks will track actual vs estimated on the dashboard.
🛒 Costco — Gas or Groceries?
We found Costco charges in your import. Help us categorize them correctly — amounts under $45 are usually gas, larger amounts are usually groceries/merchandise.

📖 How to Use VaultBooks
VaultBooks — Quick Start Guide
Budget every dollar. Crush your debt. Build real wealth. Your data never leaves your device.
1
Get your transactions in — 4 ways
On Income & Expenses, tap ⬆ Import (top-right). Pick the method that fits how your bank gives you data:
📋 Copy & Paste
Works with any bank. Open your bank's website or app, highlight the transaction list, copy it, and paste it in. This is the most reliable method — start here if you're not sure.
📊 CSV File
Most banks let you download your transactions as a .csv file. Upload that file here and VaultBooks will parse the columns automatically.
📄 PDF Statement BETA
Text-selectable PDFs only. If you can highlight the text inside the PDF, it will likely work. Scanned paper statements and photo-based PDFs won't work — use Copy & Paste for those instead.
✏️ Manual Entry
Type in a single transaction by hand. Best for cash purchases, one-off income, or fixing a missed entry. You can also use + Add Entry directly on the Income & Expenses page for the same result.
2
Track every dollar in Income & Expenses
See your income on the left, expenses on the right. The banner at the top shows your net position so you always know where you stand this month.
3
Budget every dollar to zero
Set monthly budget limits on Dashboard. Give every dollar a job — income minus expenses should equal zero. This is how you take control of your money.
4
Attack your debt — your way
Go to Debt Tracker and list everything you owe. Pick Snowball (smallest balance first for quick wins) or Avalanche (highest interest first to save the most). VaultBooks compares both so you can decide.
5
⚠ Save your work — and how to bring it back (DO NOT SKIP)
VaultBooks runs only on your device. There's no cloud, no account, nobody else has a copy. That makes it fast and private — but it also means you are in charge of saving a copy. Good news: it's two buttons. Here's exactly what they do:
💾 Save a copy of everything
Go to Settings → 💾 Save Copy Now. VaultBooks drops a small file in your Downloads folder with today's date in the name (like vaultbooks-backup-2026-04-25.json). That one file contains everything — every transaction, bill, debt, goal, and savings target. Move it somewhere safe: a USB stick, Google Drive, or email it to yourself. Save a fresh copy at least once a month. Backups don't help if you only ever made one — keep a few, in different places.
📂 Bring your stuff back
New computer? Browser wiped? Just need to undo a mess? Go to Settings → 📂 Open Saved Copy, pick the file you saved earlier, and confirm. Everything pops back exactly how you left it. Works on any computer, any browser, any phone. No account, no signup, no waiting.
⚠ Important: Bringing a saved copy back replaces what's on your screen right now. If you've added new stuff today and don't want to lose it, save a fresh copy first — then bring the old one back.
